Tonight, as we were driving home on Claude Road, we spotted a deceased brushtail possum with unusually bright eyes. The reflection told us the car strike was recent, and sure enough, the body was still warm.
We stopped to move the possum off the road and check the pouch, and our hearts sank when we saw movement. Inside was a tiny joey—alive.
We named him Claude, after the road where we found him. We’re so sorry, Claude, that you lost your mum in such a terrible way. But you’re safe now, warm and cared for, and we’ll make sure you get all the love you deserve.

A Pouch Check Can Save Lives
This is a good reminder to always stop and check the pouches of any dead female marsupials you see on the road. Many animals, like brushtail possums, carry young in their pouches, and they may still be alive, even if mum is gone.
If you see injured or orphaned wildlife in Tasmania, call Bonorong on 0447 264 625 any time of the day or night. Bonorong can arrange a local wildlife rescue service nearby, and provide assistance over the phone until help arrives.
Stay Safe on the Roads
We all have a part to play in protecting wildlife. When driving, slow down, especially at dawn or dusk when animals are most active. And if you see a dead animal, stop to check for a pouch and move it off the road to prevent further accidents.
It’s a sad reminder of the dangers our wildlife face every day, but by looking out for them, we can make a difference.
Take Action:
- Always check the pouch of a deceased female marsupial.
- If you find a joey, contact a wildlife rescue service immediately.
- Be extra cautious when driving at dawn or dusk.
Every little bit helps. Let’s protect our wildlife, one small act at a time.
