Last night, we headed out to Moina to collect a Bennett’s wallaby joey after a concerned member of the public (MOP) contacted the Bonorong 24/7 rescue line. It was one of those drives that reminds you why we do what we do. Along the way, we were lucky enough to witness the incredible diversity of Tasmania’s wildlife—healthy and thriving in their natural habitat.
As we made our way to Moina, we saw mobs of pademelons and Bennett’s wallabies grazing in the soft light of dusk, wombats meandering across the road, a Tasmanian devil darting through the undergrowth, owls perched silently in the trees, and even a bandicoot and a brushtail possum on the move. It was a beautiful reminder of the wildlife we’re working to protect, and the vibrant, wild world that’s still out there.

A Heartbreaking Discovery, But a Happy Ending
Sadly, the little wallaby we were called out for had lost her mum to a car strike. Thankfully, the kind MOP who found her checked the pouch straight away and kept the joey warm and safe until we arrived. We couldn’t be more grateful for their quick action and care.
This sweet girl will visit the team at Tasmania Wildlife Hospital for a check-up, where she’ll be monitored and receive the medical attention she may need. After that, she’ll stay in care with us until she’s big and strong enough to be released back into the wild, where she can join a mob and live the life she deserves.
