Bilby or Bandicoot?

Today, we received a rather unusual rescue call that took us to Sheffield Road near Spreyton. The call came in from a crew conducting culvert inspections in the area, who reported finding a lethargic animal they initially described as a bilby. Knowing how important it is to act quickly with wildlife rescues, we jumped in the car and headed straight for the location provided.

When we arrived, we were greeted not by a bilby, but by a beautiful male eastern barred bandicoot lying at the bottom of the culvert. This little guy had definitely seen better days. His condition was concerning—he appeared weak and had visible injuries to his back, which led us to suspect he may have been hit by a car.

Despite the injuries, we quickly transported him to the Tasmania Wildlife Hospital in Forth. We hope he makes a full recovery and can eventually return to the wild, but for now, he’s in good hands with the experienced wildlife vets at the hospital.

This rescue serves as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant when it comes to the welfare of Tasmania’s unique wildlife. If you ever come across injured or orphaned animals, don’t hesitate to call the Bonorong wildlife rescue hotline at 0447 264 625, available 24/7. Every call makes a difference.

We’re grateful to the Stornoway team for spotting the animal and reaching out. Together, we can protect and care for Tasmania’s precious wildlife.
