There’s really nothing quite like rescuing a possum stuck in a fireplace! It’s one of those moments that reminds you just how fascinating (and sometimes tricky) Aussie wildlife can be!
We got a call about a possum trapped inside a homeowner’s fireplace. After a quick chat, we grabbed all the gear, loaded up the car, and headed out. On the way there, we couldn’t help but joke about the possum potentially making a run for it inside the house, leaving a trail of soot and chaos behind. But luckily, this little one had no plans to escape, and after a careful rescue, we safely placed him in our rescue tub and released him back into the garden, where he was free to climb his favourite tree.
While this rescue had a happy ending, it also highlighted a really important point: the need for a good chimney cover.

Why You Need a Chimney Cover
Possums, like many other creatures, can often find their way into chimneys, seeking shelter, warmth, or just a quiet place to nest. Without a proper chimney cover, wildlife can enter the chimney, and before you know it, you’ve got a furry tenant in your fireplace.
A chimney cover acts as a protective barrier, stopping curious critters from climbing in and getting stuck. Not only does it keep your home safe from wildlife mishaps, but it also prevents debris, like leaves and twigs, from clogging up your chimney. Plus, it can help protect against drafts and reduce the risk of sparks flying out into your home.
The Benefits of a Chimney Cover
- Keeps wildlife out: A well-fitted cover will stop possums, birds, and other critters from finding their way into your chimney.
- Prevents blockages: Stops debris from falling in and clogging up the chimney, ensuring proper ventilation.
- Fire safety: A chimney cover can help prevent sparks or embers from escaping and causing a fire hazard.
When it comes to protecting your home from uninvited wildlife, a chimney cover is one of the easiest and most effective solutions. It’s a small investment that can save you from unexpected (and sometimes messy) surprises, like a possum stuck in your fireplace!
So, if you haven’t already, make sure to check your chimney and get a proper cover installed. It’s a quick fix that’ll give you peace of mind and help keep your home safe, cosy, and wildlife free.
If you ever find yourself with a possum in the fireplace (or any other wildlife in need), don’t hesitate to reach out – we’re always ready to help — it’s all part of keeping wildlife safe.
