Australia has now confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in wild birds across Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania. Tasmania recorded its first H5N1 detection on 13 August in a Brown Skua found at Rocky Cape National Park. Further positive detections have since been recorded on King Island and along Tasmania’s North West Coast, bringing the state’s total to six by 16 August.

H5 bird flu has now affected a growing range of Australian native birds, including seabirds, shorebirds and raptors. Victoria has also confirmed H5 in a Little Penguin from Phillip Island, where a targeted vaccination program is being introduced as part of efforts to protect the internationally significant colony.
